Realistic Botanicals: Bird Of Paradise

Class Description:

Students will learn how to paint a realistic bird of paradise flower. The bird of paradise is a flowering plant that is native to the southern region of Africa. The name 'bird of paradise' comes from its dramatic flowers, which are the main subject of this project.

This course is one of four in Megha’s latest series, Realistic Botanicals. Be sure to check out the rest of the series, where students will learn how to paint an acalypha leaf, an autumn leaf, and a bottle brush flower.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to use a reference to paint an object
  • How to build a painting color by color
  • How to apply shadows and detailing to create depth in your painting

Supplies You'll Need:

  • Round brush
  • Thin round brush
  • Watercolor paints
  • 100% cotton watercolor paper
  • 2 jars of water
  • Cotton rag (or paper towels)
